RONALD ROY CARTER – creator of 6 albums of intelligent kids’ music as Rockin’ Ron the Friendly Pirate – has released an adult album of quirky, punky, folky, funny, and sincere songs called EARSHOT. His poetic and thought-provoking lyrics are highlighted by Andre Maquera’s dynamic lead guitar and stylistic instrumental touches.
Ron navigates the world with cultural references, comic asides, and cosmic aspirations. The songs travel from Vermont to Memphis to the Himalayas via Cadillac, train, and astral plane – along the way meeting a Cowboy in training, Blues Musicians, Gutter Punks, a non-Vermont Vermonter, and a Seeker of Enlightenment. Ron eulogizes a September 11th World Trade Center victim in “Remember Kit”, explains angry words in “Mind and Mouth”, sings the praises of his partner in “Her Hands (For April)”, and overcomes rejection in the title track “Earshot”.
All the lyrics and music were written by Ron, except “Chicken by the Roadside”, co-written with Sean Cassidy. Ron performs vocals and plays acoustic rhythm guitar. Andre Maquera provides additional guitar parts, bass, banjo, programmed drums, midi effects, and backing vocals. Andre mixed, mastered, and produced the album at West Street Digital in St. Albans, Vermont. Marie Raftery and Joey Harvey, from Ontario, Canada, perform theatrical vocals on “Rich Feet Dance”. The album artwork was designed by Carrie Cook.
In addition to Rockin’ Ron the Friendly Pirate, Ron’s musical endeavors include past stints in Jeffersonville Airplane (a classic rock duo with Greg Martell), and the Fossils (a rockabilly band with Bennett Neuhauser and Steve Johnston). He met his musical hero Paul McCartney in 1993 in Atlanta.
